Tips to Maintain Your Hydraulic Systems During the Winter

Performing maintenance on your hydraulic equipment is the best way to prevent part failure   and being left “out in the cold.”

It can get pretty cold in Charlotte during the winter months and that can affect the performance of your hydraulic systems. Regularly scheduled inspections and maintenance can prevent damage to your hoses, keep the fluids flowing smoothly and prevent accidents.

You can safeguard your equipment, your team and the jobsite by following these tips.

Check Your Hydraulic Fluid

Did you know that the viscosity of hydraulic oil increases in cold temperatures? As the oil gets colder, it thickens, making it more difficult to flow through your hose lines.

  • Choosing hydraulic oil that has a lower viscosity index (VI) can be helpful.
  • Avoid mixing oil specs and weights. This can compromise performance.
  • Mixing can also result in corrosion, and wear & tear on your machinery, sometimes causing machine failure.

Store Equipment Properly

If you have hydraulic equipment not in use over the winter, where you store it matters. Whether it’s located indoors or outdoors, here are some steps you can take to protect it from freezing temperatures.

  • Choose a dry, temperature-controlled environment if possible.
  • If that’s not an option, you can take these steps to protect your equipment.
    • Store under a shelter to avoid direct sunlight and rain/snow.
    • Tarp equipment to reduce moisture exposure.
  • Use fluid stabilizers and disconnect batteries. Store batteries inside.
  • Put attachments on the ground (not suspended).
  • Inspect and keep records of condition when stored, with pictures. Note any concern areas so you’ll remember upon starting up in a few months.

Regular Maintenance

Routine inspection and maintenance and inspection are your best bet to protect your equipment and extend the life of your hydraulic systems.

  • Perform a visual inspection of your hydraulic hoses on a regular basis.
  • Check for any signs of concern – cracks, broken pieces or rust.
  • If you see any damage, do not use the equipment. Instead, contact Carolina Hose Service to assess it.
